Novelty names on pub toilets drive me mad. Buoys and Gulls, in nauticalthemed boozers, for instance. on Saturday night, I was in a City of london pub which prides itself on its game-heavy, rustic menu — venison mince, that sort of thing. A friend noticed the Gents’ was called ‘Bucks’. ‘What do they call the ladies?’ I said. ‘Fizz?’ THANKS to all of you who have written in support of the two Yorkshire lifeboatmen sacked for possession of saucy coffee mugs.

Judging by your emails, there’s something seriously amiss in the RNLI, not just at Whitby. I’m still sifting through them, but there seems to be a worrying rift between officious full-time managers and the brave volunteers who man the lifeboats. Further investigation is warranted.
