And salad grown in the aisles!

-

KEEN to know where your food has come from? Well, supermarkets are planning to start growing it right in front of you.

Leafy greens, salads and herbs will be grown in the aisles using hi-tech cabinets which provide crops with water and light.

The units will be installed in major British grocers as soon as this summer in the hope of tempting consumers through the doors. They are made by German company Infarm, which has already installed them in 50 locations in Berlin. The company has won financial backing from British investors and is now in talks with supermarkets to bring the units here. It hopes to install as many as 200 in London over the next 12 months. Infarm co-founder Osnat Michaeli said the benefit of growing produce where people shop is that it reduces transport costs, food waste and the need for packaging.

The self-contained systems do not require pesticides and can be used to grow produce as varied as tomatoes and strawberries, she added.
