Trump and Kim name the day: June 12 in Singapore

- By Vanessa Allen

DONALD Trump will meet North Korean leader Kim Jong-un on June 12 in a ‘very special moment for world peace’, the US president said yesterday.

Mr Trump said he hoped the unprecedented summit would lead to North Korea abandoning its nuclear weapons programme, adding it would be his ‘proudest achievement’.

The two leaders traded insults and threats last year as tensions mounted over Pyongyang’s missile tests, but there has been a remarkable turnaround in their relationship in recent months.

Three US detainees were released by North Korea hours

before Mr Trump revealed details of the meeting, due to take place in Singapore.

Mr Trump said he believed Kim Jong Un wanted to bring his country ‘into the real world’, adding: ‘I think we have a very good chance of doing something very meaningful.’

No serving US president has ever met with a North Korean leader.

Meanwhile, Angela Merkel and Emmanuel Macron launched a scathing attack on the US President yesterday, warning that Europe can no longer rely on the US for protection.

After Mr Trump pulled out of the Iran nuclear agreement, the German leader said Europe must ‘take its destiny in its own hands’, while French President Macron suggested the US had ‘not respected their word’, over building peace in the Middle East.
