Carey: Give women more love-cheat roles

- From Alisha Rouse Showbusiness Correspondent in Cannes

MORE films should show women having affairs so audiences see female characters ‘making mistakes’, says Carey Mulligan.

The actress, 32, said movies do not show ‘realistic portraits of women’ – while two-timing men are often ‘celebrated’.

She also admitted filmmakers sometimes cut out scenes where her characters do ‘morally questionable things’. ‘Men can be celebrated in spite of all of their flaws’, the British star told the Cannes Film Festival. ‘Whereas women – you very rarely see women on screen being unfaithful. We’re so unused to seeing women making mistakes on screen.’ The Great Gatsby star is tipped for an Oscar for her latest film, Wildlife, in which she plays a 1960s housewife who cheats on her husband. She said some of her scenes in other films had been ‘censored’ because producers believed audiences don’t like to see mean women.

The mother-of-two added: ‘I’ve worked on jobs before where my character ...has behaved in a way that’s sort of morally objectionable or unpleasant, and we’ve played those scenes on set, and when it’s come to the edit they’ve been cut out.

‘And I’ve asked why they’ve gone and I’ve been told “well, the audience really doesn’t like it when she’s not very nice”.’
