Failed politicians who f lout the people’s will
COULD there be three more perfect examples of the conceited, self- serving political class than David Miliband, Sir Nick Clegg and Nicky Morgan?
All three are conspicuous Westminster failures. Mr Miliband flew off to America in a sulk after being beaten to the labour leadership by his even more inept brother. Sir Nick dragged his party to the brink of electoral oblivion before being sacked by the voters. And Mrs Morgan is a former Education Secretary who was removed after just two lacklustre years.
Yet they have the gall to lecture the British people over their decision to leave the EU.
In a ‘joint declaration’ today, they will say they want to prevent the country suffering the long-term damage of a hard Brexit. What they mean is that they want to reverse the will of the people.
Given that so many of their constituents or former constituents voted leave (twothirds in Mr Miliband’s case), the arrogance is breathtaking.
They also claim ‘countless’ business leaders are terrified about Brexit, without mentioning that many others say it offers huge benefits. Jim Ratcliffe – self-made boss of chemical giant Ineos and now Britain’s richest man – is an enthusiastic Brexiteer, as is Sir James Dyson, arguably our greatest living inventor and entrepreneur.
Shouldn’t we listen to them, rather than three pompous career politicians?
The truth is the British people were asked whether they wanted to leave the EU and they replied in unprecedented numbers that they did – not because they’re stupid or xenophobic, but because they believe in an independent, sovereign Britain.
To stay in the customs union and single market – as these three want us to do – would mean the worst of all worlds. We would be stuck with free movement and the primacy of European law, without having any say in trade policy.
Mr Miliband, Sir Nick and Mrs Morgan claim to be putting Britain first. If so, they should accept the referendum result and get behind Government efforts to secure the best deal. This guerilla war against Brexit undermines our economic future and is an affront to democracy.
