Brown tail moth caterpillars, pictured, grow up to 1.5 inches (38mm) in length
Their bodies are covered in tufts of brown hairs which penetrate human skin, with a white line down each side and two orange dots towards the tail
Their huge appetites mean they are capable of stripping every leaf from a single bush or tree
Scientists previously tried to prevent their spread by tricking the males into mating with each other
