Carrick won’t be United’s No 2 yet

- JOE BERNSTEIN

JOSE MOURINHO is planning for Michael Carrick to be his long-term No 2 at Manchester United but won’t name a formal assistant manager for next season following the departure of Rui Faria. Carrick, 36, will join Mourinho’s coaching staff after saying farewell to Old Trafford in yesterday’s win against Watford — but the United manager says he’ll have to be patient in his new career. ‘I’m going to organise my coaching staff in a way where the assistant manager doesn’t exist,’ said the United boss. ‘I think it will be Michael Carrick in the future when he has his badges, his pro licence.’ Mourinho, who has worked with Faria for 17 years, said Carrick would offer a different viewpoint to others because of his experience as a United player. Meanwhile, United have doubts over Romelu Lukaku and Anthony Martial for Saturday’s FA Cup final against Chelsea. Martial was at the centre of a riddle when it was claimed he’d left the ground before kick-off but Mourinho dismissed a fallout, saying: ‘He was injured in a Friday training session, a knee problem. He had treatment at the training ground and stayed away.’ Lukaku has missed the past three games with an ankle injury and has been doing rehab in Belgium.
