THE 10, 000 MILE CAKE
THE four-tier traditional fruit cake (pictured) stood at nine feet tall and weighed 500lb. Baking it required nearly 700 eggs and four gallons of rum.
The cake has come to be known as the ‘10,000-mile cake’ as it incorporated ingredients from around the Commonwealth.
Members of the Girl Guides of Australia contributed sugar, spices and dried fruit to a collection. Their royal highnesses have preserved a tier of the finished cake to be sent back to Australia as a mark of their gratitude.
