Spend more on defence, says US
BRITAIN is under pressure to boost its defence spending after the US ambassador to London declared Donald Trump ‘ doesn’t want to do everything’.
Ahead of the US President’s visit to the UK next month, Woody Johnson made the case for more money for defence, saying a country cannot have prosperity unless it has security.
In a rare briefing at the new US embassy in London he said Mr Trump wanted ‘everybody involved in mutual defence’. He also hailed a US-UK partnership on new F-35 fighter jets as ‘absolutely incredible’, saying the programme would ‘make (the UK) a lot of money’ post-Brexit. Defence officials in the UK are conducting a review of Britain’s defences which will be published in the summer. Military chiefs and Defence Secretary Gavin Williamson have made the case for more money for the cash-strapped department.
