Lords a-leaping

-

tHoSe of us who would like to replace the House of Lords with an elected chamber should be careful what we wish for.

Should such elections take place, it is almost guaranteed that the upper house would be stuffed to the gills with self-appointed community leaders, Leftie activists and a generous sprinkling of snowflakes. We could end up worse off.

JEnniFEr CAMErOn, London nW2. tHe way to bring the Lords to heel is to make 250 of them redundant. Following last in, first out, this would get rid of most of the dross from the Cameron, Brown and Blair years.

P. B. HAYWArD, rochester, kent. A BLoAteD House of Lords filled with political appointees and heredi-

tary peers is no longer fit for purpose. There is a need for a second chamber to oversee, comment upon and suggest amendments to laws put forward by the Commons.

One solution is to elect two or three for each MEP constituency, producing a more compact Lords.

DR W. HIRST, Cambridge.
