Not even superheroes can save Cineworld’s takings from falling

-

SUPERHERO films Avengers: Infinity War and Black Panther ( pictured) failed to make a big enough splash with Cineworld audiences in the UK this year, as sales at the box office fell 2pc.

Though popular with cinemagoers, they could not match the audiences that Beauty And The Beast and The Fate Of The Furious brought in last year.

It is the first set of figures released by Cineworld since its £2.6bn reverse takeover of US cinema chain Regal Entertainment earlier this year. It now has 793 cinemas in ten countries.

Sales across the UK business fell 2.1pc from the beginning of January to May 13, with its retail division also dropping 2.9pc.

Around a third of investors voted against Cineworld’s pay policy in a major revolt at its AGM yesterday, because of larger bonuses for bosses.
