Bought for £17 on Amazon

-

THE acid used to attack Mark van Dongen was bought for £17 from Amazon without any checks, it can be revealed.

Berlinah Wallace ordered a one-litre bottle of sulphuric acid 21 days before the attack, having discovered Mr van Dongen was dating another woman.

The corrosive substance was 98 per cent pure, and a drop was enough to cause horrific burns. It has since been removed from Amazon.

From July 1, members of the public will need a licence to buy concentrations above 15 per cent.

It will also be an offence to sell the acid without verifying the buyer’s licence.

And from November 1, it will be illegal to possess or use the acid without a licence.
