UK faces fine from Brussels over toxic air

-

BRITAIN is facing a multimillion pound fine after yesterday being ordered to court by Brussels for breaching air pollution targets.

The UK will have to explain why 16 areas have dangerous levels of nitrogen dioxide, including London, Birmingham and Leeds, from traffic and industrial waste.

Judges at the European Court of Justice in Luxembourg could impose a huge fine plus daily penalties.

EU officials said last-minute UK proposals to cut air pollution levels, which the country has been breaching since 2010, were insufficient.
