Making history will be test of nerve

- GRAHAM POLL

MICHAEL oLIVER will create history by being the first referee to work with VAR in the FA Cup final. He will hope he isn’t the first to have to use that technology to correct an error — by him or one of his team — while the FA will pray it doesn’t turn the event into a farce. Given what has gone before this season — ridiculously lengthy delays with fans left in the dark — I do not expect oliver to have to conduct pitchside reviews. These usually concern subjective calls, upon which I trust VAR will support him. However, should a decision be shown to be wrong over a matter of fact, such as an offside call in a goal situation, then oliver can be told so he can quickly overturn his ruling. It will be quite a distraction for the officials to cope with in what could be a real test for them before VAR even gets involved.
