Empty chairs for mum and daughter

-

A MOTHER and a daughter who died in the fire are remembered by two empty chairs around the table at family occasions.

Mary Mendy, who lived on the 20th floor with her daughter Khadija Saye, was found on the 13th floor after trying to escape. Miss Saye, 24, died in a hallway on the ninth floor as a result of smoke inhalation.

Her niece Marion Telfer said the pair would always be in their hearts. She said: ‘I hate night times because night brings silence and silence brings tears of sadness because that’s when I start to remember the blaze.’ The son of a man with dementia said his father ‘stood no chance’ in the blaze. Joseph Daniels, 69, could not be persuaded to leave his flat on the 16th floor, so his son Sam went to find help.

Sam, his full-time carer, added: ‘The events of that night took his life and all traces of his existence from this world.’ The sister of ‘selfless family’ man Denis

Murphy, 56, said no one should have to die in ‘such a horrific way’. He had a ‘cheeky smile’ that stayed with all he met, his sister Anne-Marie said.
