THE greater the number of whorls — the circles and ridges — on your fingertips, the more sensitive your sense of touch. The whorls can thin in repeated contact with chemicals such as quicklime, or harsh textures — bricklayers, for example, often wear off part of their fingerprints. Wearing gloves, if you can, will protect them.
