OXFAM CAVES IN TO WELSH TWITTER MOB OVER DISPLAY OF ROYAL BUNTING

-

OXFAM was accused of overreacting after one of its book shops in Wales removed a royal wedding display following complaints.

Its shop in Aberystwyth, South Wales, pictured, had put up bunting and photo cut-outs of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle in the shop window.

But some took to Twitter claiming it was ‘culturally insensitive’ and ‘did not reflect the mood of Wales’.

Welsh poet Gruffudd Antur tweeted the charity to say: ‘The manager of your Aberystwyth bookshop seems intent on losing customers and donations.’ Oxfam Cymru sent a tweet to

apologise if the charity had ‘caused upset’. It posted: ‘It is not at all our aim to intentionally insult our supporters or members of the public.’

But some Twitter users called the complaints ‘ridiculous’ – with one urging people to ‘stop being offended by something so trivial’.

It comes after thousands signed a petition against the renaming of the Second Severn Crossing from England to Wales as the Prince of Wales Bridge. The anti-monarchist group Republic accused the Royal Family of using the name change as a ploy to ‘soften public opinion’ towards Prince Charles. Its chief executive Graham Smith said the decision ‘smacks of PR for the Royal Family, not an honour for the people of Wales’. He quipped: ‘Charles is not a man who likes to be crossed, yet now thousands will be forced to cross a bridge named in his honour.’

Mr Smith added: ‘Without public consultation or any consideration for how divisive Charles is, this government has taken a unilateral decision that will irritate people in England and Wales for years to come.

‘I’d like to know how much royal lobbying lies behind this decision.’
