WITh a lot of smiles, we read the account of the couple who spent their wedding night in a police cell (Peterborough)— we were that couple! On august 31, 1968, we got married at our local church and set out for our honeymoon in Torquay in a hired Mini. unfortunately, the car broke down on a country road. It was midnight and too dark to find a phone box. as we settled down to await the morning, an unmarked police car pulled up and two officers got out. a kipper had been put on the engine, so there was a hell of a stink. The officers took us to the local police station, where we were offered the use of a cell for the night. a PC unscrewed the all-night lamp in the ceiling and two WPCs laid blankets on the 2ft bed. Perhaps our hosts were expecting the marriage to be consummated. needless to say, the wife wasn’t having any of that, though I was keen to make history! at 6am, there was a knock on the door and we were told they had a ‘customer’ for the cell, so we had to leave. The officers took us back to our car, the aa fixed it and we were soon on our way. On august 31, we will celebrate 50 years of happy marriage, with three children, seven grandchildren and a great-grandchild on the way. Michael and Margaret Carrier,

Westwood, Notts.
