Dementia? vou’re not alone...
IN THE UK, one person is diagnosed with dementia every three minutes — leaving many feeling helpless and excluded, as Dementia Action Week is highlighting until Sunday. But they are not alone, and neither are their carers. One great source of practical advice, help and information is the Alzheimer’s Show, the UK’s leading event for families, carers, health professionals and those living with Alzheimer’s, dementia and memory loss. At this year’s show, at London Olympia from June 8-9, fascinating new features include the Four Seasons Dementia Experience, which gives a sense of what it is like to live with the condition. There is free, professional advice from Admiral nurses and dementia advisers, bookable at the show, while leading experts will talk about the latest developments in research, diagnosis, drug trials, telecare and more. Experienced carers will share their experiences, giving tips including how to keep on top of everything, even when you feel you can’t go on. Topics will also include adult social care, coping with challenging behaviour, dying well with dementia and what good care looks like. Meanwhile, three amazing people with dementia will be giving a brilliant insight into what life is like for them. There will also be question and answer sessions and fun, educational activities, including reminiscence therapy, singing, movement and cognitive stimulation therapy. Plus, from large-face clocks and nightlights, to GPS trackers and smartphone apps, you will find plenty of items on display to help with daily life. As part of Dementia Action Week, the Alzheimer’s Show is offering carers (and concessions) half-price tickets, so they can come along for £7.50 instead of £15, and there’s free entry for people living with dementia. The code is DAW50 and tickets can be booked online at
