GPs are fobbing us off with pills says Kirsty
NEWSNIGHT presenter Kirsty Wark has said too many menopausal women are ‘fobbed off’ by their GPs with antidepressants and told to get on with it.
The broadcaster, 63, urged more women to talk about going through the process.
Miss Wark told Good Housekeeping magazine: ‘It can be easy, it can be hard, it can be hellish. What I found so distressing was how many women are fobbed off by their GPs with anti-depressants or [ told] “you’ll get through it”, when there is all manner of help.’ Miss Wark suffered a ‘hard menopause’ after stopping hormone replacement therapy over cancer risk fears.
Sleepless nights and severe sweats soon followed, leaving her ‘wrung out’. She started taking HRT after a hysterectomy at 47. This left her body unable to produce the female sex hormone oestrogen.
Meanwhile, Miss Wark has said she is interested in hosting BBC1’s Question Time after David Dimbleby steps down.
She said: ‘I think there will be many people when David Dimbleby decides he doesn’t want to do it any longer. I think I will be one of them, but I’m sure lots of people will throw their hats into the ring.’
