Prisoners ‘can replace EU workers after Brexit’
INMATES freed on day release will be used to fill vacancies in the workforce left by departing EU migrants, the Justice Secretary said yesterday.
David Gauke said inmates and ex-offenders could plug shortfalls in sectors such as catering, construction and agriculture.
He said quitting the EU presented an opportunity for convicts who want to gain work experience before they are freed.
He said the mindset of many employers would have to change in line with the dynamics of the labour market after Brexit.
Mr Gauke said migrant workers had made a big contribution to the economy but the public expected ‘us to ensure that as many UK citizens are employed as possible’.
