Woman breaks arm during arm-wrestling contest

- By Richard Marsden

A WOMAN has broken her arm while taking part in an armwrestling contest.

The 20-year-old’s opponent was so upset by the injury that she then fainted.

Paramedics had to be called to treat the woman at a Young

Farmers’ event at Irthington, Cumbria, on Saturday.

Andrew Dickinson, a partner for Kentdale First Aid, which was providing medical cover at the event, said that the woman who broke her arm had been given pain relief before an ambulance took her to hospital.

He said: ‘She broke her arm while wrestling with another girl. It was a bad break and she was in a lot of pain.

‘The other girl realised she had broken her arm and fainted. The team were straight on to her – she was fine.’ There were around 800 young farmers – those aged from ten to 26 – gathered for the Northern District Field Day, competing in sheep shearing, bale stacking and flower arranging. The all-female arm-wrestling contest was one of more than 100 events.

Mr Dickinson added: ‘Other than that, the day was fantastic. It ended with a dance which 600 people attended and we were on site until 1.30am.’
