WHY I’M WORRIED ABOUT . . .
CATARACT surgery rationing. A cataract is not a cosmetic problem, it is a very real medical issue which makes vision so cloudy that it hinders the ability to carry out everyday tasks.
So why hospital trusts are still denying cataract surgery — as reported by this paper yesterday — to all but those with the very worst vision is beyond me.
To make people wait until they can barely see puts them at risk of accidents and falls.
I would like the managers who came up with the idea to try living with cataracts for a week and then see how they feel about imposing these delays.
