Duck! Albert the angry swan at war with boaters

- By Tom Payne

IT’S hard enough staying balanced in a fine racing kayak at the best of times.

So spare a thought for these two men who strayed into foul-tempered Albert the swan’s territory.

This was the moment the two kayakers felt the bird’s full wrath as they got a little too close to his cygnets on the Grand Western Canal in Devon.

Albert and his partner Victoria have nested at the back of Tony Nixon’s garden in Tiverton for the last four years, earning a notorious reputation among those who dare come near.

Mr Nixon, a 70-year-old retired joiner, said: ‘Last week he sank an inflatable kayak and the poor bloke had to swim to shore. When he is attacking the boats, he flaps his wings so hard it sounds like he’s hitting them with a lump hammer.’

The grandfather-of-two said the kayakers in this attack escaped unscathed.
