A TALL blind man dressed like a Viking — with flowing white hair and beard — would stand like a statue on the streets of New York. Beside him would be various musical instrument­s he had made, plus some of his own music for sale. He called himself Moondog, but his name was Louis Thomas Hardin, and he’d lost his eyesight when he was 16, after an accident with a blasting cap. In MOONDOG: SOUND OF NEW YORK (RADIO 4, 11.30AM) Huey Morgan (pictured) tells the story of a truly original talent.

AMY ROSENTHAL, daughter of the late playwright Jack Rosenthal, pays tribute to her father with the drama THE ROSENTHALS: THIN ICE (RADIO 4, 2.15PM) based on her experience­s of going to university. The play is an affectiona­te response to

earlier works written by Jack about the empty-nest syndrome he felt when Amy left home for university.

(RADIO 4, 3PM) Clare Balding joins two friends, Mark and Debbie, who have both found solace here.

WITH performanc­es by local musicians from Sheffield, EXPOSURE (RADIO 3, 11PM) features a great set by Lucy Cheesman and a session from folk guitarist Jim Ghedi.
