Should the chimes of Big Ben mark Brexit?
WHAT a disgrace Big Ben will not strike its famous bongs when Britain leaves the EU on March 29 next year. According to the House of Commons authorities, it isn’t considered to be an important national event (Mail). Surely Brexit is a milestone in our history and deserves to be celebrated. There were commemorations for joining the Common Market, so there should be the same for leaving. We have waited a long time to regain our independence and what could be more fitting than to hear the bongs of Big Ben ring out in joyful celebration?
SUSAN RICHARDSON, Sheffield.
WHY keep bonging on about this subject? The majority of people in Britain, who live farther than half-amile from Big Ben, wouldn’t be able to hear it and couldn’t care less.
TREVOR BROWN, Glossop, Derbys.
SO THE sour-grape brigade have decided Big Ben will not ring out to celebrate leaving the EU. Not to worry, I have a bell and I will ring it to celebrate our freedom. I urge everyone else who values the British way of life to do the same — buy a bell and ring it with all your might. Let the entire country reverberate with the glorious ringing of bells from Land’s End to John o’ Groats.
Ringing all of these bells will declare our independence and pride in our country.
ROY MARTIN, Maidstone, Kent. DOES anyone care about the decision not to sound Big Ben to ‘celebrate’ Brexit Day? Big Ben represents national unity; Brexit represents disunity.
G. GROOMBRIDGE, Southampton.
I AM outraged that John Bercow has stopped Big Ben from striking on the night we leave the EU. Whatever your feelings about the issue, whichever side you are on, it can’t be denied this is an important national event.
