Sky give Neville free rein to bait Liverpool

- Charles Sale

SKY SPORTS are turning a blind eye to their top pundit Gary Neville sending out controversial anti- Liverpool comments on social media following the Champions League final.

His tweets to his four million followers included the poem: ‘they thought they’d conquered Europe; Celebrating six; thank you Gareth Bale; Made them look like D****; the twenty Sixth of May; Always in our heart; United won the treble; the scousers fell apart.’

It is remarkable that the former Manchester United player should try to stoke the rivalry between the two clubs in juvenile fashion at such a time, especially considering the Jamie Carragher situation.

Carragher, who has formed a popular double act with Neville on Sky’s Monday Night Football, is still waiting to hear whether his employers will have him back next season. He was taken off air after spitting through his car window in the direction of a 14-year- old girl after her father had wound up Carragher on the motorway following Manchester United’s premier League victory over his former club Liverpool in March.

Yet astonishingly Sky will not be even reminding Neville of his responsibilities, giving him the freedom to say what he wants within reason on his personal twitter account.

A Sky spokesman said: ‘We are aware of what Gary said on twitter after the Champions League final, but it is not considered an issue.’

SKY SPORTS NEWS added pressure on the FA to make good their promise that all 23 players in Gareth Southgate’s World Cup squad will be available for interview at the same time at St George’s park on tuesday by promoting the date on air yesterday.

However, the FA are now faced with phil Jones possibly missing the event with his partner due to give birth. And the FA might not want to subject raheem Sterling to facing the press.

Sterling’s complicated personal life has become the centre of attention following the fallout over his new gun tattoo. Before that latest difficulty, Sterling sought advice from lawyer Austin Chessell, a family and child mediator at specialist family law firm Shortlands in Hammersmith. Chessell said yesterday: ‘I never talk about any of my clients’ business.’

IT has emerged that Zvonimir Boban, the former Croatia playmaker who is now deputy secretary-general of FIFA, was most responsible for persuading Gary Lineker to host the World Cup draw in Moscow despite BBC’s Match of the Day presenter having previously been such an arch-critic of FIFA.
