Morrisons’ £7 Kiwi wine ‘world’s best’

- Daily Mail Reporter

A £7 BOTTLE of sauvignon blanc has been named the best supermarket wine in the world.

The New Zealand white wine from Morrisons – currently on offer down from £10 – was awarded 97 out of 100 points at the Decanter World Wine Awards.

It was the highest-ranked ownbrand supermarket wine to win a prestigious platinum award, which is handed out to only the highest scoring wines.

Only 17 other bottles scored higher marks, including a £200 bottle of Domaine de la Vougeraie Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru 2016.

Morrisons also won a platinum award for its £7 ruby port. No other British supermarket won a platinum medal. The award-winning Mastercraft sauvignon blanc’s grapes come from a vineyard in the Central Wairau Valley in Marlborough.

Morrisons spokesman Clive Donaldson said: ‘We’ve worked with hard-working grapegrowers and winemakers at this vineyard to create a wine that not only tastes great, but is affordable for customers.’
