I ended up £18,000 in debt just trying to feed my kids
SARAH Carey, 54, found herself in £18,000 of debt while trying to keep her family afloat after her relationship broke down.
Most of the debt was made up of bank charges after she was forced to reduce her hours as a trainee solicitor 15 years ago to look after her two young children Julia and Agatha.
Miss Carey, who is from London and has a degree in law from Cambridge, said the situation quickly escalated as she relied on credit cards and
overdrafts to make ends meet. She said: ‘I wasn’t being greedy or spending money on luxury items, I was buying everyday things and trying to feed my kids.’ The debt mounted and Miss Carey also ended up shelling out thousands on a fridge from a rent-to-own store.
She was eventually helped by a debt charity but called for more to be done to help vulnerable people, adding: ‘A cap must be put on the charges – they’re the killer.’
