The ‘wide boy’ cars feeling the squeeze
THE UK is becoming a nation of ‘wide boys’ – because many cars are now too big to get through road width restrictions.
The trend for beefed up 4x4s and SUVs means some vehicles cannot squeeze through posts and bollards designed to stop large vans and lorries entering, a report claims.
Others make it through with an inch to spare, said the guide by consumer group Which? The widest car is the Land Rover Discovery at 7ft 2in. Typical restrictions on British roads are 6ft 6in. ‘Many cars are getting larger,’ said Which? ‘It’s no longer just performance cars and large van-like MPVs that are too wide – some family SUVs are now too large.’
