Gerrard starts Rangers reign — in France

- By OLIVER TODD

STEVEN GERRARD starts work as Rangers manager today but he is already beginning to stamp his influence at Ibrox. Gerrard, 38, was appointed on May 4 before completing his commitments with Liverpool and BT Sport. His Rangers reign starts today, although the Liverpool legend will be in the south of France rather than in Glasgow. Gerrard is at the Toulon Tournament — played between Under 21 teams — and watched Japan v Portugal and Canada v Turkey last night. Rangers’ season starts early with the Europa League first qualifying round on July 12. ‘We have already been working on our plans and strategy for the new season,’ Gerrard said last night. ‘We know what we want to achieve and we also know what will be required to meet the challenges ahead, but we will be ready. ‘We need to give the players every chance to perform at their best as often as possible because that’s what fans demand.’
