Trump’s summit with Kim is back on

-

DONALD Trump’s cancelled summit with Kim Jong-un is to go ahead after all, the President said last night.

The decision was announced after Mr Trump emerged from a meeting with Kim’s ‘right-hand man’ Kim Yong-chol at the Oval Office. The North Korean aide personally delivered a letter from his leader to Mr Trump. It was the first time in 18 years that a senior North Korean official had visited the White House.

Mr Trump later confirmed that the summit would go ahead as originally planned in Singapore on June 12.

Although he said he had not yet opened the letter from the North Korean leader, Mr Trump said it was ‘very nice’ and ‘very interesting’. North Korea was ‘going to be a process’, he said, adding that he believed the process would ultimately be ‘successful’.

‘We talked about it – we talked about ending the war,’ Mr Trump added.

He indicated the US’s campaign of ‘ maximum pressure’ on North Korea was at least on hold, vowing no new sanctions while talks are ongoing.

The President cancelled the summit late last month, citing North Korea’s ‘ tremendous anger and open hostility’.
