NATURALLY conceived identical triplets – born from a single egg that divides – are phenomenally rare, with the chances of having them up to one in 200million.
Another possibility is that the fertilised egg splits into two and then one of these eggs divides again. Non-identical triplets – babies born from three eggs – occur once in every 4,000 naturally conceived pregnancies.
Multiple pregnancy is more likely after fertility treatment as it is usual to transfer more than one embryo to the womb.
