(Very) modern manners

-

WHAT should you do if the vintages in your extensive cellar are much finer than the wine you’ll be offered at a dinner? If you’re hedge fund tycoon Crispin Odey, you bring your own, of course. That’s what the ebullient 59-yearold, who has a £750 million fortune, did this week when he was invited to a dinner in the Long Room at Lord’s. The event was held to raise funds for the rebuilding of Caribbean cricket grounds ravaged by Hurricanes Irma and Maria. Odey brought sufficient white burgundy, claret (Chateau Langoa Barton 2011) and 2005 Chateau d’Yquem Sauternes, at £300 a bottle, to fuel him and a group of pals. Sadly, Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson and former cricketers Sir Viv Richards, Brian Lara and David Gower were among those who had to make do with the hosts’ Spanish white and Chianti — yours for a tenner a bottle. Cheers!
