Plan that seaside escape!

-

MOST of us have tantalising memories of seaside holidays. For some it’s recalling glistening ripples washing over warm toes, for others, fresh fish and chips eaten with vinegary fingers on the beach, or a balmy sea breeze swishing through their hair.

And while we love to bask in that nostalgic feeling, today there’s a 21st-century twist that makes a sandy seaside break even dreamier.

Listen to the crash of the waves and the call of the gulls, and mix in new paddleboard adventures, beach barbecues, arty visits and trendy eateries.

Bumble about on creaky Victorian piers or lace up your hiking boots for a cliff-top stroll in search of puffins and gannets.

Then retreat to a boutique hotel, vamped- up coastal cottage or contemporary lodge with all mod cons, from wi-fi to a hot tub. All this indulgence — and the age-old tonic of sea air, staggering views and soft sand. Isn’t it time to start planning your seaside escape?

DORSET’S most stunning stretch of shingle features big in the Hollywood film On Chesil Beach, released here on June 15. Set in 1962, the romantic drama, based on Ian McEwan’s novel, tells the story of the unexpressed fears of a young couple, and has had rave reviews.

Stay close to this 17-mile seaside wonder at Litton Cottage, in historic Litton Cheney, through Mulberry Cottages. Footpaths take you straight to the coast and Abbotsbury Swannery is just 15 minutes away. Or explore further afield to Durdle Door.

BOURNEMOUTH sits beside a seven-mile crescent of glistening sand, where you can sunbathe, cycle, try beach activities or even whizz down a pier zipwire to the beach.

Be on the beach for the fantastic Bournemouth Air Festival, from August 30 to September 2.
