NOW CURRAN JOINS THE YOUNG LIONS

-

SAM CURRAN was not only the seventh-youngest England player to make his Test debut, he was the third under the age of 21 to appear for them this year — after Hampshire legspinner Mason Crane, who played at Sydney in January and Somerset’s off-spinner Dominic Bess (above), who made his debut last week at Lord’s.

STUART BROAD finished the day level on 414 Test wickets with Pakistan great Wasim Akram, who has been in England commentating for Sky. And Broad is not far from following his teammate Jimmy Anderson into the alltime top 10. Currently sitting 10th is South African quick Dale Steyn, with 419 , though Broad must first overhaul two spinners — Sri Lanka’s Rangana Herath (415) and India’s Harbhajan Singh (417).

SHADAB KHAN led Pakistan’s recovery from 79 for seven with his third half-century in only his fourth Test, all from No 7. The 19-year-old, whose main suit is his leg-spin, made 55 against Ireland last month, then 52 to set up Pakistan’s win at Lord’s. His 56 here meant their last three wickets added 95.

CHRIS WOAKES went at five an over but, after a disappointing Test winter, resumed his habit of taking wickets in England. His three for 55 took his overall figures at home to 45 wickets at 23 apiece, compared with his away record of 18 at a costly 61.

ALASTAIR COOK and Keaton Jennings managed the third half-century stand for England’s first wicket in the last 28 innings, stretching back to the Lord’s Test against South Africa last summer.
