Make Gove PM, says £400k Tory donor

-

A TORY donor yesterday called for Michael Gove to be installed as the next Prime Minister after losing faith in Theresa May’s ability to deliver Brexit.

Hedge fund boss Crispin Odey, who has given the Tories almost £400,000, said he did not think Mrs May could carry Brexit through any more’.

Mr Odey, a Eurosceptic, told the Observer: ‘There’s no point in voting for freedom if you don’t know what to do when you’re free,

‘What is true is that you have a whole lot of people who didn’t want this to happen who are in charge of it happening. I would go for Gove. He’s the only minister who is still being a minister.’ The call was dismissed last night by Tory grandee Sir Nicholas Soames.

Sir Nicholas said Mr Odey was ‘by universal consent a chateau-bottled, irrelevant twerp’, adding: ‘He should shut up and go away.’

But concerns about the Government’s direction on Brexit were underlined yesterday by former cabinet minister Priti Patel, who accused the PM and Chancellor Philip Hammond of ‘negativity’.

A source close to Mr Gove said he was ‘fully supportive of the PM’ and urged Tory supporters to get behind her. But his former adviser Henry Newman added to the chorus of concern about Brexit, claiming that the Government ‘still doesn’t have a clear vision for our EU relations’.
