After hottest May ever, it’s Flaming June!

- By Inderdeep Bains

FLASH floods one day and glorious sunshine the next – it could only be Britain.

But for now at least, it seems the hot weather is here to stay.

After the recent torrential downpours, we are set for a week of sublime sunshine, with temperatures yesterday already hitting 27C.

The drier and sunnier weather will come as a relief after the misery of travel chaos and flash flooding last week.

Yesterday, temperatures peaked at 27C (81F) in London and much of the country basked in sunshine on the last day of half term. Met Office forecaster Sophie Yeomans said: ‘The high pressure is still in charge so it means it will be quite dry and stable compared to last week’s thunderstorms. Temperatures will be fairly warm and will reach the low 20s for most of us.

‘But there could be more humid air from the South which could mean higher temperatures towards the end of the week.’

She added: ‘Temperatures could reach the mid to high 20s, so 27C or 28C.’

The warm spell comes after the UK’s hottest and sunniest May since records began in 1929. The average daytime temperature was 17C (62.6F), beating the previous high of 16.9C (62.4F) in 1992, according to the Met Office. It looks as though the country is also in store for a warmer than average June.

Miss Yeomans added: ‘It will stay fairly warm throughout the month.

‘The average temperature for this time is usually 18C to 19C.

‘But now we are seeing low to mid 20s and the temperature is expected to stay in and around that region.’

However, there could be rain in parts of northern England and Scotland, which will turn to scattered showers.

The Met Office has a weather warning in place for western Scotland and Northern Ireland until 8pm today due to a risk of thunderstorms.
