I’m a cyclist who hates cycle lanes

-

I AM the man you love to hate: yes, I am a middle-aged cyclist. But I think cycle lanes are a waste of money (Mail).

The Highway Code says you should give cyclists as much room as when overtaking a car. If drivers did this, we wouldn’t need cycle lanes. Sadly, obeying the law appears to be an optional extra for many road users.

At times cycle lanes are empty, at others they are dangerously overcrowded. This is when the MAMILs — middle-aged men in Lycra — bully other cyclists. They think they are in the Tour de France, while we are only trying to get to work.

Perhaps there is an alternative to cycle lanes by using technology to switch the priority use of roads depending on demand. ALISTAIR MCINTOSH, London N7.
