BORN FROM HIS GRANDMOTHER’S WOMB

-

Doctors remove some of the daughter’s eggs and fertilise them in a dish to make embryos. These are frozen until needed. Her mother has her womb, complete with two major arteries and two veins, removed in a four-hour operation similar to a hysterectomy. Donated womb is implanted into daughter in a six-hour operation. She is put on powerful immunosuppressant drugs to stop the transplanted womb being rejected. Six months later, when doctors are confident the transplant is a success, one of her embryos is thawed and placed in her new womb. Baby is delivered by C-section, after being carried through pregnancy in his grandmother’s womb.
