PRINCESS ELIZABETH expects to become a mother in the autumn. An official announceme­nt from Buckingham Palace last night stated that she will undertake no public engagement­s after the end of this month. The baby, who will be second in the direct succession to the throne and the King and Queen’s first grandchild, will become a Prince or Princess, and if a boy may be created Prince of Wales. [Charles was born on november 14, 1948.]

JUNE 5, 1963

BLUEPRINTS for a flying car are being studied by nato chiefs. It has been designed by British aircraft and university researcher­s to fill a gap in Western defence. The car is planned to beat the lethal problems of a nuclear-devastated area — by flying over it.

MARK WAHLBERG, 47. The American actor, ex model and rapper (called Marky Mark) is the youngest of nine children. The star of Deepwater Horizon and Transforme­rs (right) was a drug addict by 13 but became a devout Catholic after being jailed aged 16 for violence. He co-founded Wahlburger­s, a chain of burger joints, with two brothers. ROSS NOBLE, 42. A regular on BBC 1’s Have I Got news For You, the newcastleb­orn comedian got into stand-up after discoverin­g he was dyslexic. not wanting an academic career, he had stints as a street juggler and stilt-walker before turning to comedy. When noble and his Australian wife Fran lived on a farm near Melbourne in 2009, it was destroyed by a bush fire along with all his possession­s.

BEATRICE DE CARDI (1914-2016). The daughter of a Corsican count and an American singer was the world’s oldest practising archaeolog­ist, working until aged 100. After World War II, she braved bandits and wolves to excavate sites in Balochista­n, Pakistan. Historian Michael Wood dubbed her ‘partMiss Marple and part-Indiana Jones’. WILLIAM BOYD (1895–1972). The American actor, who played cowboy Hopalong Cassidy, estimated in 1940 that he had starred in 28 films, fired 30,000 shots and killed at least 100 ‘varmints’. He’d worn out 12 outfits and 60 ten-gallon hats, ridden his horse Topper more than 2,000 miles and saved 20 heroines — but kissed none.
