Grainger fears over 2024 funds

DAME Katherine Grainger has warned that Team GB’s medals target for the Paris Olympics in 2024 will need to be reduced if funding cuts go ahead. The UK Sport chair, who won medals at five Games before retiring from rowing, said: ‘The suggestion is very strong that money will be tighter and tighter.’ Although 2024 funding will not be announced for some time, serious concerns remain about how falling lottery ticket sales could impact on the budget. Grainger said: ‘If the money was cut to such an extent that we couldn’t build around sports and athletes, then success would be affected. We don’t know by how much or where we would finish in a medals table.’
