Now pay £150 to remove a smart meter

PEOPLE are being charged up to £150 to have smart meters removed from their homes.

One OVO Energy customer who changed their mind after having the technology installed was forced to pay £150.15 to get the meter replaced with an analogue version. OVO said it would only remove a smart meter free if it was faulty.

Flow energy customer Stanley Cumston, 73, was told he must pay £ 92 to have his smart meter removed after it was fitted without his permission. The retired engineer from Stockport needed a new meter as there was a fault with his analogue one. But he did not realise the engineer was putting in a smart meter. Stanley refused to pay and switched suppliers instead.

Flow energy says the engineer didn’t have analogue meters in his van and that Stanley should have been given a choice. It adds that the fee goes to third party which fits the meters. British Gas, EDF Energy, Eon, Npower, Scottish Power and SSE say they do not charge to remove smart meters.
