FURTHER to earlier stories about coins on the line, we used to walk to primary school by ourselves over several roads, through the woods and across a railway line. Some of the big boys (nineyear-olds) put ha’pennies on the rails and waited for a train to squash them. They then retrieved the enlarged ha’pennies and took them to the sweet shop where they tried to pass them off as pennies! Bridget Boyle, Stockton-on-Tees, Co. Durham.
