Grenfell betrayal

-

ALL aspects of our lives are ruled by the health-and- safety industry — from children having to wear safety goggles to play conkers, to women’s groups not being allowed to sell home-made jam at a village fete.

I have had to attend courses to be told how to lift heavy objects and have been warned to be careful when carrying a cup of coffee.

Where were the health-and-safety experts when Grenfell Tower was fitted with inadequate fire doors and dangerous cladding?

D. RIGLEY, Malmesbury, Wilts. THE fire doors in Grenfell Tower that were meant to withstand flames for 30 minutes as required by the safety regulations failed in less than 20 minutes.

There could be 20,000 more of these doors from the same manufacturer in other high-rise buildings that need replacement at great cost.

This comes as no surprise to me. Twenty-five years ago, as a borough council building control manager, I wrote an article in the Building control journal predicting 70 per cent of fire doors would fail, as they had not been installed in accordance with the correct regulation.
