Are cycle superhighways a waste of money?

-

IN CAMBRIDGE, there are vast numbers of cyclists competing with cars. Walking to the railway station, I noted that only one car in the gridlocked traffic had a passenger. In Germany’s big cities, there are many more cyclists on the cycleways. An answer to pollution, endless traffic jams and even the obesity crisis is to get out of your car and on to a bike.

STEPHEN BIDDLE, Ely, Cambs. IT’S been argued that cycle superhighways have cut the number of cyclist deaths. What we don’t know is how many people have died as a result of slower-moving traffic and the resultant air pollution. Low gears in 20 mph areas around schools and play areas also mean more fuel is used, which contributes to the levels of noxious gases. As the Mail’s report revealed, many of the new cycle superhighways are little used and do not warrant the gridlock caused on the roads. Politicians want to reduce fossil fuel use, but cycle lanes are not doing anything to solve that problem.

COLIN PASCOE, Biggin Hill, Kent.

HOW I’d love to have a cycling superhighway built for my commute through rural Cheshire to Crewe. Instead I have to ride as if every motorist wants to kill me — a few have come close. Cars hurtle through country lanes at breakneck speed not knowing what’s around the next blind bend.

DON PHILLIPS, Winsford, Cheshire.
