Towers of London are destroying the skyline

-

SIMON JENKINS describes the horrific prospect of 511 additional tower blocks for London to serve as gold bars in the sky for overseas investors while key workers live in sheds in the suburbs. We need emergency government measures to tackle the housing crisis. This means no further sales to non-doms and no properties allowed to remain empty. If the owner can’t find tenants, then the local authorities should be able to use them to reduce the social housing waiting list. I used to love visiting the capital, but it has become depressing, alien and lacking in soul due to the loss of its heritage and character. The ruining of London and its once famous skyline is benefiting only wealthy developers, their cronies and investors. It is devastating for the rest of us to watch. The desecration of our capital city needs to be stopped.

LAURA KING, Hove, E. Sussex. THE London skyline has been derided as towering monstrosities by Simon Jenkins (Mail). My painting shows these buildings looming like giant ghostly gods over a Dickensian line of Victorian chimneys and rooftops plus brightly coloured graffiti in the foreground. It’s the view from Southwark between London Bridge and Waterloo East railway stations. CHRISTOPHER O’BRIEN,

Battle, E. Sussex.
