Iris Warner, 90, suffered horrific injuries when she was clubbed around the head at least three times by a man who shone a torch in her eyes. The ‘fiercely independent’ former bank clerk was left fighting for her life with bleeding on the brain after being rushed to hospital. Her son, Jeffrey, 60, who found her collapsed in a pool of blood on Monday, said the thieves ‘took as much as they could’ from her home. Mr Warner said last night that police suspected more than one intruder could have been responsible. ‘She’s talking now, she’s lucid,’ he said. ‘We still don’t know exactly what happened as she couldn’t get a good look at him because he was shining a torch right into her eyes. ‘But she does remember being bashed over the head three times. She’s still not in a very good way, of course. She doesn’t know how many people there were who broke in. It could have been one person or it could have been five.’ Shocking photographs released by Mrs Warner’s family reveal the terrible injuries she suffered. Last night, her brotherin-law John Tranter said it was the sec- ond time she had been targeted Mr Tranter, 70, of Amersham, Bucks, said a burglar armed with a torch took jewellery and cash in late April. He said his wife, Lesley, had been at her sister’s bedside since the attack. ‘Anne is still very confused,’ he said. ‘It wasn’t until Tuesday that she was awake. But it wasn’t until Wednesday that she would recognise anyone. ‘Lesley and Jeff would go in and she wouldn’t know who they were and she could not communicate. We don’t know exactly when the break-in happened. She was wearing her night dress at the time, is all we know. ‘She was burgled before... about six weeks ago and the same thing happened – she awoke with someone Shocking: A photo released by her family reveals the injuries suffered by Iris Warner, inset standing over her and waving a torch in her face. ‘They took jewellery and some cash that time, but I think they left when she woke up. She hadn’t even been able to replace the things stolen the first time round before this has happened.’ The attack is the latest to shock the nation amid soaring violence and attacks on the vulnerable. The ‘defenceless’ pensioner was found at her home of more than 40 years in Kingsbury, north-west London. She could have been lying on the floor for almost two days as she last spoke to her sister was blood all over the property, including her bedroom, the bathroom, the stairs and front room. Det Insp Saj Hussain, who is leading the inquiry, said: ‘It is one THE family of a young father stabbed to death for his watch by moped muggers urged police to identify a mystery accomplice last night. Danny Pearce, 31, was fatally wounded in front of his girlfriend in a robbery that was so ferocious, bystanders feared it was a terrorist attack. He was targeted as he left an upmarket jazz club by a pair of thieves riding a stolen moped. His killer, south London thug Jordan Bailey-Mascoll, 25, faces life behind bars after he was convicted of murder. But a second of the most heinous crimes I have seen in my 17 years of policing. ‘The fact is, she is a 90-year-old defenceless woman. Also, it is the state of her injuries. It appears that whoever the individual or individuals were, they did not stop by hitting her once. They left her for dead.’ Asked if they thought they had killed her, he replied: ‘I think so. Even the criminal fraternity will be shocked by this. ‘There must be someone out there who knows something and they should get in touch.’ Neighbours said Mrs Warner was an active woman who enjoyed historical crime novels and gardening. Her husband, Arthur, a railwayman, died aged 84 in 1999. She has two sons, Jeffrey, and Alec, 63, who lives in Australia. Residents man, known only as ‘Ghost’, remains free after the knifeman refused to reveal his identity. Speaking after the guilty verdict, Mr Pearce’s mother Jan, 63, said her family will never recover from their loss. ‘We need to get these murderers off the street,’ she said. ‘Who knows who will be next and then another family will go through the same devastation as us. ‘I don’t want another mum to go through this agony. I need to know those responsible will be locked up for a very long time.’ said they suspected Mrs Warner was the victim of a burglary gang targeting Asian families who kept gold at home. Newsagent Kaveet Patel, 23, added: ‘She has come here every morning for decades. She picks up a paper every day. She always had the correct change. I would never even count it, she was such a trustworthy woman. ‘I hope she will be okay and hope to see her in here again soon.’ A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder over the death of a 100-year-old mugging victim. Zofia Kaczan died on Wednesday after suffering a broken neck in the attack on May 28. A 39year-old man who was arrested on suspicion of robbery has now been arrested on suspicion of murder. The Old Bailey heard Mr Pearce was ambushed with his girlfriend Stephanie Holland and two friends in Greenwich, south London, last July. CCTV footage shows BaileyMascoll and his accomplice picking out Mr Pearce, who had a five-year-old daughter.
