It’s the final insult

Scotland used to beat England at football, they still do at rugby. But cricket? Now that’s the...

England crashed to one of the most embarrassing defeats in their cricket history as Scotland secured a thrilling six-run victory and captain Eoin Morgan admitted ‘We were miles off where we needed to be.’ The no 1 ranked 50- over side and favourites for next year’s World Cup were humbled by 29-year-old journeyman Calum Macleod, who made an unbeaten 140, then lost their heads in trying to reach 372 and pull off the biggest one-day run chase in their history.

‘We didn’t play anywhere near our best,’ said Morgan. ‘We didn’t do enough

to win. We might have scraped past them and won but even if we had done, there were still mistakes that we have to rectify.’

Jonny Bairstow became the first Englishman to hit three successive one-day hundreds and recorded the third fastest century in 50-over cricket by an Englishman, off 54 balls, but fell immediately afterwards as the slide began.

‘It’s huge for Scotland and I’m not massively disappointed because it was a good competitive game,’ Morgan added.

This was a triumph for a Scotland side who failed to qualify for the World Cup in heartbreaking fashion.

‘It does not take away what happened to us against West Indies and our feelings about a 10-team World Cup but this was a special day,’ said Scotland centurymaker MacLeod.
