Yahoo fined £250k in UK
YAHOO, the internet giant that runs an email service and a search engine, has been fined £250,000 after taking two years to tell 500million users that their personal information had been stolen by hackers.
More than 515,000 Britons were affected by the breach in 2014 but were only told in 2016.
Last night, the Information Commissioner’s Office fined the company’s UK arm, accusing it of failing to take ‘technical and organisational measures’ to protect the stolen data, which included names, email addresses and passwords.
The ICO’s Jamie Dipple-Johnstone said: ‘Organisations need to do more than just shut the door. They need to lock it. Then check the locks.’
Yahoo declined to comment.
